As a child, I loved the German TV series “Die Sendung mit der Maus“ (“The Program with the Mouse”). The introduction was in a different language every week. I used to listen curiously to the strange sounds and I was even more curious to hear the answer: “That was Spanish“, “That was Turkish“ or “That was Swahili“.
Now all of you can play the game on the internet: The Great Language Game (http://greatlanguagegame.com/) currently features 78 language samples. Depending on the level, you can chose between two, four or more possible answers. Of course you know French – but do you recognize Ndebele or Malayalam?
You can also look up the number of native speakers, the language family, etc. (www.ethnologue.com)
Or you can just train your listening skills and have fun with the languages.
